Sitting around – literally – all day wasn’t how I envisioned spending the next few days. I was getting restless with Kent hovering over me like a mother hen. He did keep his promise and took me to the ER that morning. Nothing was broken, except that a few ligaments and tendons were badly torn. I was ordered to rest the leg and given some anti-inflammatory to help ease the pain.

During the next few days, life slowed down. Kitara watched me from afar, apparently scared to come close. Kent kept up his vigil as my guardian, insisting I stay off my feet. Rayne and Carlon spent most of the time catching up for the lost years he was locked up.

On the third night after Carlon came home, Ron turned up. He’d expressed that whatever he wanted to talk to me about was urgent. In addition, we were anxious to know how he managed to get Carlon out of Iona when there were no records of arrest or imprisonment. Basically, Carlon never existed in the prison system.

After the preliminary greetings, I ambled to Gage’s study as requested by Ron, which would afford us some privacy. As soon as the doors were closed Ron opened his briefcase and retrieved some documents. I eyed him keenly before hopping to the desk and absently taking Gage’s leather bound chair.

“I told you I wasn’t signing those,” I stated succinctly. “Why you harping on this?”

“This is not just about you and Gage now,” he remarked, taking the chair in front of the desk. “This is about a hundred and fifty employees at the main office alone, plus the hundreds more around the country.”

I wasn’t sure what he was getting at, and my confusion sounded in my voice. “What are you talking about?”

“Since Gage’s accident and Leroy’s disappearance, stock prices have been plummeting. Shareholders are uncertain about the future of Wilder Industries without a leader at the helm.”

I had been so preoccupied with finding my brothers that I hadn’t thought about the company. If shareholders were thinking about jumping ship that could spell trouble for the future of us all.

“What can I do?”

He shoved the papers my way. “Sign these first and then make an appearance at the next emergency board meeting tomorrow morning.”

“That soon?”

“It was originally scheduled for two days ago, but as Gage’s attorney, I requested a delay. Some of the board members, out of respect for your brother, obliged. It was Gage’s wish that if something like this happened, that you would take charge.”

Something still baffled me. “But Leroy still has control over the company, how do I handle matters when he isn’t dead?”

“Gage took care of that.” He sighed as a somber look crossed his face. “Apparently after Gage got Leroy to sign the documents, Gage arranged to have the documents delivered directly to me.”

“How is that possible?”

Ron stood and walked to the drink cabinet. He lifted a half bottle of whiskey and held it up for my benefit. “You don’t mind, do you?”

“Not at all.
